MISSION STATEMENT

“Extending the life cycle of Portland’s urban trees through the creation of exceptional wood products”

Large-scale commercial mills demand uniformity within their wood processing to ensure a consistent product. However, this means that trees with distinctive formations or markings are discarded into landfills or wood chippers. Because Urban Timber Works is a small company we can embrace and build our business off of distinctly marked wood with natural character - some of the most interesting and beautiful wood in our opinion. The proof is in the inventory!

Urban Timber Works reclaims the lives of Portland trees by creating a post harvest value. Through the recovery of felled urban trees, we create regionally distinct finished products that can endure in our city. From cabinetry to flooring, Urban Timberworks provides building and architectural components that continue to add beauty and value to our region. By further extending the life cycle of our trees and retaining the embodied energy of a wonderful natural resource, we help build communal wealth, educational opportunities and a greater appreciation for our local environment.

We are fully familiar with FSC Standards, Controlled Wood Standards and Government Regulations, which allows us to support local woodworker efforts as well

The staff of Urban Timber Works embraces urban salvage wood with a belief that Portland will become a city where:

  • Trees that are felled within Portland’s urban forests would be recognized as a valuable resource that does not require additional embodied energy for material usage.
  • Local buildings are born from local responsibly managed resources.
  • The economic system would rely on the creative utilization of native materials, resident labor, and local retail.
  • Sustainability is no longer the example in building and business but rather the intuitive standard.
